Is it alright to buy flowers for men? Of course it is. There are suitable flowers for all occasions but you will need to choose style and colour carefully.

Men, just as much as women, like to receive unexpected gifts. And nothing is quite so unexpected to men as a gift of just flowers. Remember that you can find appropriate flowers for all occasions, whether it is Valentine's Day, a birthday or just an ordinary day. However, you will need to exercise a little discretion if you’re buying flowers for men as they won’t thank you for sending a massive bunch of pink carnations to their place of work. Here are some ideas on what you should consider before you buy.

Flowers for Men by Colour

This is relatively straightforward. Avoid ‘girly’ colours, such as pale pinks and pastels when choosing flowers for men. Whilst pastels may be acceptable as shirt colours, as flower colours they are just too feminine to consider giving to your average guy. Think about stronger hued flowers such as deep reds and purples through to black. These are considered to be more masculine colours but any strong shade can be considered. Deep colours can be accented with lime greens or white for a contemporary and elegant twist, for example, deep purple tulips and clashing lime green euphorbia or black roses with white tulips.

If the man you want to buy flowers for supports a sports team why not choose the flowers by the colour of his favourite team’s strip? Or be patriotic and get them in his country’s flag colours if the Olympics or World Cup is on? Single blocks of colour work well too, as do single varieties of flower. For example, a bunch of red tulips, or a bunch of blue irises are bold and beautiful flowers for all occasions without being too ‘flowery’.

Flowers for Men by Variety

Forget fussy, fancy and frilly flowers tied up with ribbons. Men prefer something much more simple and straightforward. Simple is not necessarily subtle and a big, bold bunch of hand-tied sun flowers with raffia or straw instead of ribbon should fit the bill perfectly.

In general, the more architectural the plant the more likely it will appeal to men. The Eryngium, also known as Thistle or Sea Holly, is a fine example. There are several different varieties ranging in colour from the deepest blues and purples to the ghostly silvers. The silver varieties work especially well with dark flowers. Black roses, for example, look stunning with silver sea holly and red chilli peppers.

Just remember you can give flowers for all occasions but that does not mean they have to be just flowers. When choosing flowers for men you can afford to be a little bit more adventurous with the addition of bold foliage, twigs and other interesting plants. Say it with flowers and surprise the men in your life.
